Being a super leader can negatively impact engagement

Why are the police in Metropolis fat and lazy?

Because Superman will always arrive to save the day! So, why bother?

Being an effective leader means that sometimes, it takes superpower over oneself to facilitate rather than fix. To resource rather than rescue. To coach rather than control.

Of course there may be times where directive leadership is critical. However, if this becomes the default process, the long-term result can be disengaged and under-utilised talent. This has a proven adverse ripple effect on retention and profitability.

Alternatively, imagine the growth potential if your team players could perform with autonomy and lead confidently because of co-created purpose and mission. Remember the principle, people support the plan they create.

One high-level example of this was demonstrated by Netflix. Netflix embraced a "freedom with responsibility" culture, allowing employees to set their own hours, make spending decisions and operate without rigid policies. The release of their culture deck in 2009 grew their subscriber level from 10M to 260M by 2025.

Whilst this is an extreme approach, it shows what’s possible when transformational leaders are willing to drop their cape temporarily and nurture the hero in others.

Remember change starts with one person.
